Note regarding death date: Ann McKindley's obituary (1912) states that John Downey had died many years previously and that her daughter had admitted her to the State Hospital 14 years ago so John must have died prior to this.

According to the Obituary of Mrs. Ann Downey in the Henry ILL paper and the life story written by Mary Ann Mangan, from Jacklyn Flannery, John died before 1898 in Henry Ill.

Headstone information has that John was aged 44 when he died.

Elisha enrolled as a Private September 3, 1861 in Booneville, Kentucky, mustered-in to Co. D of the 3rd ,& subsequently the 7th, KY Infantry September 22, 1861, and was promoted to Corporal by Dec. 31, 1863. He was involved in a revolt against a 'hanging post' and was arrested Feb 5, 1864. He was tried by Court Martial on the charges of Mutiny and on April 16, 1864, he was found guilty and sentenced to be reduced in rank & confined on Ship Island at hard labor on government fortifications for one year. After serving out his sentence, he was returned to his regiment (April 9th 1865) as a Private and was honorably discharged May 13, 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky. See his Court Martial record.
Elisha's description at the age of 40 was: 5 feet 10 inches tall, dark complexion, dark hair, and blue eyes. In depositions in his pension record, Anderson Peters said that before the service, Elisha "was just one of the stoutest young men in our county" and Daniel McCollum, who served in the same company with him, said that "he was considered one of the stoutest men in our Co".

Pension record has age 22 at time of enlistment in1861, making birth year - 1839. This is probably correct because on the Tax List in 1843, Joseph is listed as having only 5 children between the ages of 5-16.
