*CAPTAIN JOHN RENTY BAKER*

Capt John Baker 7 Octobe 1735- 1820 Clay Co. Ky. md 1st Elizabeth Terrill, d/o James Terrill & neice of Obediah Terrill, Long Hunter.
John was a "long hunter" and in 1763 was living on the Green River, in what is now Ky, with the Cherokees. Beginning about 1763 he and other long hunters hunted and trapped on the Green River, made trips down the Cumberland River to Spanish Natchez to sell their furs. Col. Gasper Mansker once became ill in Natchez and John Baker stayed with him until he was able to travel, then he & Gasper walked cross country back to Va.

John served as a Captain in Col. Benjamen Cleveland's Regiment during the American Revolution. A great grand son, when app;ying for membership in the SAR, wrote, "Capt. John Baker and his company went to the resccue of Col.Benjamen Cleveland when the Tories were about to hang him."

John Baker came to Kentucky after the war and lived Fayette, Boyle, Madison, Rockcastle and Clay Co's. Late in life he married 2nd Aza Williams.After Aza died John lived in a rock house near the mouth of Buffalo Creek, now in Owsley Co, Ky. He died there in 1820. John Renty is said to have fathered several 1/2 Indian children.

In March of 1954, Ruby's grandfather, Robert Hensley, a constable in Owsley County, was shot down by two gunmen (Clifton Gabbard and Earl Baker), when he and Sheriff Clarence Taylor approached their truck, which was off in a ditch on Buckhorn road near the forks of Cow Creek. Both Robert and Sheriff Taylor died of their wounds. -

Hannah is probably William's 2nd wife & he was likely well along in years by this time. Hannah herself was about 51 years old. There is no record of any children through this union. However, I believe that a daughter of William Marchant's through his first marriage was the wife of William or James Thomas. In 1789 William & Hannah sold the tract of land they lived on in UNION Co. In 1790 there is a William Marchant on the CHESTER Co. Census with 2 males 16 & Older and 2 females, perhaps combining 2 households.
