Marchant's name appears as "Markum" on son, Joseph's death record and as Merchant on some census records, but the name "Marchant" is on most family records and there are descendants by that name today. Marchant may have been his mother's maiden name. The Marchant family name appears on early passenger lists from England & also in old 96 District of SC.
Marchant first appears on the Franklin County GA Tax Lists in 1801, on page 159. His brother(?) JESSE is on page 160. In 1802, Marchant is on page 116, an ISAAC Thomas is on page 113,and Jesse is on page 150.
Marchant won a Land Lottery in Georgia and on, Feb. 5, 1806, was granted 202 1/2 acres in Baldwin County. [Note: Baldwin County was the home of the State Capitol, Milledgeville from 1804-1868.] Although I found no record of Marchant selling his property, I did find on the 1809 Baldwin County Tax List, a man by the name of John Simmons who had purchased 405 acres (2 lots) from "Thomas & Butler". If one of these lots was Marchant's, then he apparently sold his land the same year he moved to Clay County KY (1808).
In 1810 Marchant lives on Red Bird River near Jonathan Wilson, but by 1821 he had settled on the left fork of Cow Creek on land he purchased from Joseph Roberts. In 1830, Marchant was listed as owning 50 acres of land on Southfork (of the KY River), obtained from J. DAVIDSON (probably his daughter, Jane's, father-in-law) and in September of 1835, he sells the land he purchased from Joseph Roberts to Richard Reynolds.
DNA testing indicates that some of Marchant's brothers stayed in SC when he and others went to Georgia. One line of these Thomases ended up in Texas. Their oldest known ancestor being BENJAMIN Thomas, born 1794 SC, which is interesting because one of the suspected forefathers of Marchant's line is DANIEL BENJAMIN, died Oct 1780, Chester County, SC.
Marchant was one of the judges who observed the voting for the election in Clay County in 1824. [Clay Co. KY Court Order Book B, 1815-1832]
